Ugo is an applied economist by training, with a PhD on measuring resilience and subjective wellbeing in post-disaster, post-conflict Indonesia. He is currently working on the development of a new Research & Innovation policy agenda on Innovating Cities with Nature-Based Solutions.
His areas of expertise include: sustainable urban development, beyond GDP indicators and environmental accounting, social innovation and citizen engagement.

Brenden Jongman has broad interest in the issues of natural disaster risk, climate change, socioeconomic development and adaptation, with a special focus on flood risk management. Currently I am working as a disaster risk management specialist with the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR) at the World Bank in Washington DC, where he is supporting a number of national level disaster risk assessment projects aimed at advising national governments on risk reduction and risk financing strategies.
He also holds a position as researcher with the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) in Amsterdam, and work as a consultant to the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre. Projects I am currently involved in span a range of world regions (including East Africa, Afghanistan, Mozambique, Malawi, Pakistan and Philippines), focusing on risk assessment, resilient reconstruction and innovative risk management strategies to various natural hazards.
Previously, Brenden worked with the Labs team on disaster risk assessment, hazard mapping, early warning systems, and risk reduction strategies. Prior to joining GFDRR, Brenden worked as a researcher on flood risk management and climate change adaptation at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He also worked with the Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre in Uganda, Kenya and Mozambique on the use of forecasts for decision making, and as a researcher with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.
Brenden holds a BSc in earth science and economics from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, an MSc in management from London Business School, and a PhD in water and climate risk management from the Institute for Environmental Studies in Amsterdam (cum laude).
